Paper Trading

Test your strategies without real money, on EZPZ Trader Paper or on your broker's own paper account.

On this page

Two ways to paper trade

  1. Your broker's paper account. Brokers such as Alpaca offer a simulated account with their own fills. Connect it like a live account and choose Paper.
  2. EZPZ Trader Paper. A simple built-in paper broker. Connect it from the Brokers page; it needs no broker account and starts with $100,000.

Either way, signals run through exactly the same steps as live trading: the same checks, sizing, market-hours queueing and Journal.

Paper is a simulation

Paper fills are an approximation. Use paper to check that your strategy and settings work, not to predict live performance. Real fills, slippage and rejections differ.

How EZPZ Trader Paper fills orders

Order Fill
Market Fills at once at the live quote, using the subscription's market price type (midpoint by default). The signal's price is used only if no quote is available.
Limit Fills at once at its limit price. It never rests waiting for the price.
Stop Market, Stop Limit, Trailing Stop Not supported.
Take profit / stop loss Not supported.

What it can trade

Asset class Notes
Stocks Long and short. Fractional quantities supported.
Stock options and index options Buying calls and puts (long only). Expired contracts are settled every day after the close.
Crypto Pairs quoted in USD, USDT or USDC. Long only.
Futures Not available on EZPZ Trader Paper.

Market hours still apply: a signal while the market is closed is queued for the open, just like on a live account.

Moving to live

When the results look right, add a subscription for your live account to the same strategy, with the same settings. Keep Auto Submit off for the first few live trades, and approve them yourself on the Approvals page.
