Market Hours & Order Queueing

What happens to a signal that arrives while the market is closed, and how extended-hours trading works.

On this page

Queued for the open

When a signal arrives while its market is closed, the trade isn't sent to the broker overnight. It's queued, shown as Queued on the signal's page, and sent automatically when the market opens.

  • Each subscription keeps one queued trade per ticker. A newer signal for the same ticker replaces the older queued one.
  • cancel signals are never queued: they cancel right away.
  • With Auto Submit off, the trade first waits for your approval. The wait for the open starts once you approve it.
  • Whether a trade queues depends on its first order. For a flip (close a long, then open a short), the exit's extended-hours setting decides.

Cancelling a queued trade

A queued trade shows a Cancel button in its status on the Trades list and on the signal's page. Cancel it if you no longer want it sent at the open. Nothing has been sent to the broker yet.

Sessions

All times are US Eastern (ET).

Asset class Regular session Notes
Stocks 9:30–16:00, Mon–Fri Closed on NYSE holidays; 13:00 close on early-close days.
Stock options 9:30–16:00, Mon–Fri Same calendar as stocks.
Index options 9:30–16:15, Mon–Fri 13:15 on early-close days; 16:00 for a PM-settled contract on its expiration day.
Futures Sun 18:00 – Fri 17:00 Daily break 17:00–18:00; grains have their own sessions; closed Christmas and New Year's Day.
Crypto Always open Never queued.

Extended hours

Stocks can also trade 4:00–9:30 and 16:00–20:00 ET (to 17:00 on early-close days). Turn on Allow entry extended hours and/or Allow exit extended hours in the subscription, or send "extendedHours": true with signal override allowed.

An order goes out in extended hours only when:

  • the broker supports extended hours for stocks (see Broker Support);
  • the order type is Market or Limit, with time in force Default, DAY or GTC;
  • it's not an entry with a take profit or stop loss attached. Those wait for the regular session.

Outside the regular session, a Market order is sent as a Limit order, because brokers only take limit orders then. It needs a price, from the signal or a quote. If there's neither, it's skipped.

Futures and crypto have no extended-hours setting.

Send a price for pre-market trades

Some brokers' free data has no pre-market quote. Include "price": "{{close}}" in your alert so an extended-hours order always has a price.
